Khao San Road Area  Detailed interactive location map Khao San Road Area

Formerly a quiet area with just a few budget guest houses, Khao San Road in the district of Banglamphsu is rapidly becoming an alternative Bangkok attraction and a "must do" on the backpacker and GAP student trail. Cheap guest houses, street cafes, markets, boutiques, bars and lots of young travellers on route to Thailand's tropical beaches provide a colourful enclave in this old part of Bangkok. .

Sights and Sounds

Over the last few years the area has gained popularity following the success of the novel and film "The Beach" which features Khao San Road. (Although actually filmed in Manila as the real Khao San Road was not considered 'realistic enough'). The days of Brahmin bulls freely wandering around the streets have long given way to souvenirs, air-conditioned shops and CD stalls, but the area is still interesting to walk around.

Much of Khao San is very untypical of Bangkok with video cafes filled with international visitors, but some of the back streets nearby still retain some of their past charm. If you're planning to visit some of Thailand's famous beaches, this is a good place to buy your clothes, hats, shoes, Thai handicrafts and beach gear. As well as street stalls, Banglamphu has an extensive market for those last minute buys.

Located close to the river, its easy to go by river taxi to Bangkok's attractions like The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) Wat Pho (Bangkok's centre for Thai massage) and the Royal Barges Museum. The National Gallery and Silpakorn University Gallery are also within walking distance.
